So you made the decision to finish your unfinished basement. That means you need to start thinking exactly what luxuries you want in your new design. Your floor plan is a very crucial part of the whole project. Matter of fact, without the floor plan you can’t really even start working. Here are some of the options you have when deciding what you want with your new finished basement.
OK first off, you need to decide what you want to add to your home. Do you want a bathroom downstairs? Bathrooms are a smart addition to any basement. Just imagine having to walk up the stairs every time you had to use the bathroom. Now you have to decide if you want a guest bedroom. If you do not have a guest bedroom upstairs, then it is something to consider. That or maybe one of your teenagers will want to live in the basement. Any parent can enjoy that. Maybe you want more than one bedroom if you have the space. Other things to consider would be if you wanted a great room or where you wanted closets and storage space. Then you need to decide if you want a kitchen and if you want a bar. There are a lot of different options when you are painting a blank canvas.
This is the simplest, but it makes for a very spacious layout and works best for smaller homes. This would be to pretty much have an open design. There would not be any walls to separate rooms, but instead a kitchen and bar overlooking the great room. This would be the perfect solution for a homeowner looking for a TV room, movie theatre, or place to watch the sports games. This would be the open entertainment room with things like dart boards and pool tables to take up and divide space. A bathroom typically would also be added.
The next idea would be to have your basement be a full apartment. Maybe you will choose to rent it out one day. Your floor plan would then include one or more bedrooms and bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room area. Basements don’t typically ever have dining rooms.
